About Anthem: the Beginning.

Africa’s rich natural resources make it ideal for harnessing renewable energy. But unreliable supply has often held the continent back.

The energy crisis in South Africa spurred swift policy changes and opened the door further for involvement from the private sector. Amidst this, and founded upon a very successful track record in the government programme (REIPPPP), Anthem has emerged as a leader, committed to empowering industries, nations and people.

Born from the integration of African Clean Energy Developments (ACED) and Energy Infrastructure Management Services (EIMS) Africa, and strongly supported by their majority shareholders, African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) and the AIIM Managed IDEAS Fund, Anthem is one of South Africa’s largest Independent Power Producer (IPP). To date, Anthem has 24 projects across five provinces and Eswatini, and a market share exceeding 12.5%.

By uniting industry leaders and project partners, lenders and contractors, Anthem is unlocking Africa’s energy potential, and driving a sustainable future.

About Us

A Leader in  Renewable Energy Transition.

In 2024, we capitalised on an opportunity to not just integrate two organisations, but two sets of complementary skills and market-leading expertise as well as bring all the IDEAS Fund majority owned utility scale projects into a single entity: Anthem. This strategic integration has positioned Anthem as a leader in Africa’s energy transition, built on a commitment to fostering a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone.

Mahlako Energy Fund and Norfund are important founding investors and shareholders in Anthem, who will be taking up shares in the platform upon customary approvals.

The Anthem Effect:

We develop projects and generate power that fuels the boundless potential of South Africa and the region.

Doing what we do

involves synchronising time, expertise, collaboration, passion

and our continents rich natural renewable resources

A Legacy of Innovation, a Future of Potential.

African Clean Energy Developments (ACED)

(ACED)

Africa

Since 2008, ACED has been a pioneer in the renewable energy sector. Apart from successfully developing more large-scale projects under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) than any other developer, ACED has also been the leader in the private or Commercial and Industrial offtake market.

Energy Infrastructure Management Services Africa (EIMS Africa)

(EIMS Africa)

Africa

Founded in 2017, EIMS Africa quickly became one of the largest locally-owned renewable energy companies in South Africa. With 16 utility-scale projects in operation, and a combined generation capacity of over 1GW, EIMS Africa experienced consistent growth and established an undeniable presence in the renewable energy industry.

Integrating these two entities into Anthem empowers us to ramp up production, continue to compete with local and international companies, and more seamlessly lead South Africa into an energy transition that’s agile and efficient.

AIIM and the IDEAS Fund

(AIIM and the IDEAS Fund)

Africa

African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) and the AIIM Managed IDEAS Fund were historically the majority shareholders in ACED and EIMS respectively, and IDEAS the majority shareholder in the underlying projects in construction or operations. These shareholdings are now transferring to Anthem ownership, where the IDEAS Fund will remain the majority shareholder in Anthem.

AIIM and the IDEAS Fund have been key to ACED and EIMS successes.

AIIM, a member of Old Mutual Alternative Investments, develops and manages private equity infrastructure funds designed to invest long-term institutional unlisted equity in African infrastructure projects.

AIIM actively manages investments in North, East, West, and Southern Africa and as of the end of December 2024 has assets under management of USD 3.2 billion, with a track record extending across eight African infrastructure funds.

With offices across South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Cote d'Ivoire, AIIM have a thorough understanding of the African business environment and extensive experience spanning a range of infrastructure asset classes.
